This Way, That Way, The Way
a Seussian sign
This work is about illusion and confusion, ridiculousness and charm, and direction and transformation. This series incorporates elements of industrial and directional signage, marquee arrows, and billboard scaffolding. These βsignsβ are made to be intentionally confusing. The surplus of arrows that point in all directions make them completely useless as a directional tool. The repeating arrow, duplicated over and over again in a multitude of forms create a contraption thatβs only function is absurdity. On one side, the arrow is patterned with dazzle camouflage. Also called razzle dazzle, this pattern was painted on battleships in WWII in order to mislead enemies about a shipβs course. This illusionary pattern never really worked for those ships, and was mostly effective for raising morale.
These sculptures were created during the pandemic, when I had been feeling lost and aimless. This work addressed my internal confusion and were my response to the world getting turned around.
